Here's some ways to improve your fan games:
1. Use static movement. It's much smoother than platform or any other kind of default movement used in CNC/TGF/MMF or any other game making program. I'm sure platform is good for some beginners, but once you go static you'll never want to use platform again.
2. Look at other people's work. I don't mean ask around for someone's game open-sourced and just change the background and say its your own. I'm jsut saying if you're having trouble with static movement or anything else, try looking around for either a binned game or just an engine that's opened-source. The Master's engines are really good for looking at the coding.
3. Always ask for help if you need it. Just don't ask every 5 seconds about something. Also, wait paciently ;D. The Master and Drew are very good people to ask about fan game related questions. Just post a topic in the help forum and either them or someone else will be glad to help you. Don't be afraid to ask.
4. AI are a great addition to your game. Although they are hard to make, they can make your game 10 times better. The easiest way to do this is to make a counter called "Random Counter" or something like that down the line. Then make it Every 0.05 seconds or so Set the Counter to random(200). After that, make if "Random Counter" equals 10> do an action (whatever you want it to do). Then, do the same thing ("Random Counter" equals #), but change the number from 20, then 30, and so on.
5. Don't make it impossible. I'm not saying make it so incredibilly easy that when you jump onto the first platform infront of you, you win the game. I'm saying make it so not the best player in the world can only beat it.
6. Don't make the bosses a bouncing ball movement and make it bounce around the screen the whole time. The only reason you would do that is if the boss was actually a ball that bounces off of stuff. Use some unique movements and a lot of AI involved.
7. Levels can be hard sometimes for the average Fan Gamers. Believe me. I have a heck of a time making levels for games. Don't take the easy road and make it a crappy platform as your whole level. Use a variety of objects in your level. Experiment as much as possible.
8. Don't make the bosses take 1 hit to kill. Make a counter to keep track of the hits on guys. Or even better, use alterate values to keep track of hits on the bad guy.
